Chelmsford Now Has Choice of Either Tsongas or Golnik for Congress in November

Barring some sort of unprecedented write-in campaign, Chelmsford now has a choice of either incumbent Niki Tsongas (D-Lowell) or challenger Jon Golnik (R-Carlisle) following Golnik's win in Thursday's primary over Tom Weaver (R-Westford).

The matchup will be a repeat of what was the Massachusetts Fifth Congressional District race in 2010.

“I am excited and honored to have received the nomination and again have a chance to face Representative Tsongas in November,” Golnik said in a released statement. “I am proud to spend this evening celebrating with my family and friends who have worked so hard these past eight months. Without the hard work of all of our volunteers and supporters we would not be where we are today—ready to fight for victory in November.”

Although she was uncontested for the nomination, Tsongas was also satisfied with Thursday's results, issuing a statement of her own.

"I want to thank the voters of the Third Congressional District for nominating me to be your Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress," she said. "Serving as your representative has truly been an honor and I intend to spend the next two months working to earn your vote in the General Election."

Meanwhile, Weaver told Westford Patch he will be focusing on helping other candidates and the Show ID to Vote initiative, but will not aid Golnik due to the fact that he believes Golnik cannot beat Tsongas and any resources given to Golnik would be wasted

"He already lost by 13 points in a great season" said Weaver on Golnik's 2010 campaign. "I wish him luck, but, you know."
