Chelmsford Organization Uses Dogs to Fight PTSD

Operation Delta Dog is a Chelmsford-based organization helping to combat PTSD by pairing dogs with veterans.

It's said that dogs are man's best friend. A Chelmsford-based organization is working to show that the canines are also a soldier's best friend.

According to a story in the Boston Herald, Operation Delta Dog is on track to pair two local veterans who suffer from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with dogs that will perform a variety of tasks to make their lives easier.

The Herald reported that the dogs are able to turn on light switches, identify when their owner is possibly having a seizure, and alert the owners when a person is coming up from behind them.

Groton resident Carolyn Barney has been working to train Rocky, a yellow lab, and Emma, a black lab, over recent months, according to the newspaper.

Also according to the Boston Herald story, Operation Delta Dog has a small amount of funding, but founder and president Trisha Blanchet is working to find other ways to gain the funding to continue her efforts.

"It's all happening, which is very exciting," Blanchet told the Herald.
