Dom Zaher Continues to Excel for Legion Team

Recent high school grad Dominic Zaher is making moves for the North Chelmsford American Legion Post 313 baseball team this summer. He plans to continue baseball in college next year.

Dominic Zaher just graduated a few weeks ago, but that hasn't stopped him from pursuing his passion.

During his time at Chelmsford High, he participated in soccer, basketball, and his main sport, baseball. Although Zaher has completed his high school career in sports, he is far from done competing in baseball. The Fisher College bound recruit will play baseball for the D-1 NAIA team, and this summer, he will compete on the North Chelmsford American Legion Post 313 baseball team.

Zaher has been competitively participating on two baseball teams for the past six years. Until his junior year, the standout centerfielder could be found on the infield, playing shortstop. His coaches recently decided to try playing him in the outfield, a choice that made a huge difference in his game.

“It worked out pretty well, because I have excelled more in center field than I have my whole career,” said Zaher, of his position swap. “Recently, I’ve done better than I ever had, and I think its because I made the most of the outfield.”

Zaher, a strong defensive player, lead his team to a 15-6 record this spring season, after playoffs. Barely making errors in play, the outfielder said that gaining confidence, and becoming comfortable with his game, helped him get to the next step of competitive baseball.

“I’m very comfortable, and I move the ball well when I go to catch a fly ball, or I’m charging into the infield. I’m very confidant, and I feel like my defense is a strong suit,” he said.

Zaher plays in the Legion team along with many of his teammates from Chelmsford High. He said that although some players from Westford Academy are also on the team, there isn’t much difference between the two seasons in terms of the team atmosphere.

The coach for the summer team is the Chelmsford High JV coach, and according to Zaher, Ryan Cody, the Legion coach, and the Chelmsford High coach, O’Keefe, have very similar enthusiasm for the game.

“Its very comfortable to play for both guys, I’ve played for coach O’Keefe for four years, and I’ve played for coach cody, the legion baseball coach for the past two years, so it was an easy transition. They are very similar people, they are both competitive and both want to win every time, so it works well,” Zaher said.

Zaher truly loves the game of baseball, and hopes to have a successful college career.

"I have a great time every time I go out and play ball, I just feel like I have nothing to worry about. I just have a great time, and I love being on the field and playing, [this summer and next year], I hope to win as many games as possible,  get better everyday; just have a good time with it," he said.
