Local Man Heads to N.H. to Campaign in Primary

Tom Gilroy has always been involved in politics in town.

With the New Hampshire primary tomorrow, one Chelmsfordian is doing his part to make his voice heard when it comes to the GOP candidates.

Tom Gilroy, a member of the Republican Town Committee, spent time on Friday in Bedford at candidate Rick Santorum headquarters and then in Manchester working for candidate Newt Gingrich.

Gilroy made some calls for Santorum and gathered signs and bumper stickers before heading to Manchester to get signs and stickers for Gingrich.

"The energy and activity level was much higher in Bedford than it was in Manchester," he said.

Gilroy said although Romney may be the front runner, he's too moderate for Gilroy's taste.

"The conventional wisdom, the media and the establishment GOP are solidly behind Mitt," he said. "I enjoy bucking all of the above and I really like Santorum and would really like an alliance between him and Newt and even possibly Perry. Mitt is way too progressive and liberal for my political tastes, but should he be the ultimate nominee, I will work tirelessly to beat Obama."

Gilroy said he will keep the signs and stickers to distribute to Republican Town Committee members in a few months. The signs can only be erected 21 days before the March 6 GOP primary.
