Man Indicted For Axe-Wielding Carjacking In Chelmsford: DA

The Middlesex DA's office recently announced indictments handed down between Aug. 14 and Sept. 20.

CHELMSFORD, MA – A Lawrence man has been indicted on 10 charges in connection with a crash and subsequent carjacking on I-495 in Chelmsford earlier this year. Marcos Garcia, 43, is accused of using an axe to carjack another vehicle after crashing his car and crashing three more times before getting tased and arrested by police.

A Middlesex County Grand Jury indicted Garcia on charges of armed carjacking (two counts), carjacking (two counts), assault with a dangerous weapon, larceny of a motor vehicle, attempting to commit a crime (three counts) and leaving the scene of property damage, the District Attorney's office said.

Police said on March 2 around 7:30 p.m. Garcia crashed into a guardrail and a tractor trailer on the southbound side of I-495.

"Following that crash, Garcia, who was shirtless, covered in blood, and holding a pick axe, approached an unidentified elderly couple who had stopped to assist at the scene and attempted to steal their vehicle," Massachusetts State Police said in a previous statement. "The elderly man was able to remove Garcia from their vehicle, and the couple left the area."

Garcia then allegedly tried to get into an unoccupied Mazda hatchback, but the car was locked. The driver, who was nearby and had stopped to assist at the scene, "moved further away from his vehicle, as he feared for his safety," according to state police. The car's window was later found shattered.

Police said Garcia then got into a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox parked at the scene and fled, striking a tow truck in the process. The 28-year-old Clinton woman who owned the car was not inside at the time, according to police.

Garcia then crashed into at least three cars in Chelmsford before stopping in Littleton, where he was met by state troopers, state police said. He allegedly tried to steal a Toyota Sienna with two children inside but was tased and taken into custody.
