Mass. Third District Republican Opponents Tout New Endorsements

On the heels of Niki Tsongas’ impressive fundraising numbers, the two men seeking to challenge her directly this fall have just announced new endorsements for their campaigns.

The campaign of Tsongas’ 2010 opponent Jon Golnik (R-Carlisle), released a statement announcing that they have earned the endorsement of Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis.

Sheriff Evangelidis was elected to the office in 2010, following eight years serving as a State Representative from Worcester’s 1st District.

 “I am supporting Jon Golnik for Congress because I know his first priority is jobs and we need economic recovery and job growth in this district, this state and in this country,” Evangelidis said.  “I have succeeded in my work in finance, as an attorney and now as Sheriff because I have always tried to work with everyone. I know as a Congressman, Jon will do the same.  He is practical and will work with everyone, regardless of political party, to make sure the people of the new Third District are being properly represented.

Evangelidis joins several other prominent Massachusetts Republicans and Republican Town Committees who have already endorsed Golnik.

Meanwhile, Golnik challenger Tom Weaver (R-Westford), earned the support of the National Defense PAC, a political action committee geared toward electing fiscal conservative veterans.

Weaver served on the U.S.S Virginia and Texas and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1974.

“Because of (Weaver’s) service to this country, he has an understanding of the issues facing active duty and retired military and their families,” said retired U.S. Rear Admiral and National Defense PAC chairman James J. Carey.  “This experience and knowledge will make him a valuable asset in Congress.”
