State Secretary of Education Visits Chelmsford Public Schools

Massachusetts Secretary of Education Matthew Malone, Ph.D., visited the McCarthy Middle School and Chelmsford High School.

Massachusetts Secretary of Education Matthew Malone, Ph.D., visited the McCarthy Middle School and Chelmsford High School on Monday, September 29th. Dr. Malone toured the schools, with Superintendent Dr. Frank A. Tiano, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Linda Hirsch, Director of Technology and Information Anne-Marie Fiore, and school committee members Mike Rigney, Al Thomas, and Evelyn Thoren. During his tour, Dr. Malone stated that one of his goals is to “visit all the school districts in the Commonwealth”.

McCarthy School Principal Kurt McPhee and Dr. Tiano began the tour in Mrs. Flanagan’s sixth grade classroom where Dr. Malone was very impressed with the literature that the students were reading. Mrs. Flanagan is the mother of Connor Flanagan, who is fighting lung disease. Dr. Malone has been following Connor’s progress at https://www.twitter.com/connorsfight

The tour continued to Chelmsford High School where Principal Charlie Caliri accompanied Dr. Malone to the new Black Box Theater, family and consumer science classes, the science wing, athletics, technology education classes, the career center, the performing arts center, and the cafeteria. Secretary Malone personally reached out to many students and spoke with them regarding their college and career goals. Dr. Malone emphasized the amazing opportunities in the Commonwealth’s college system.

Dr. Malone noted that the students in all classes were “100 percent engaged”. Superintendent Tiano said, “It was wonderful to have Dr. Malone see first-hand all of the wonderful work our teachers are doing with the students in the Chelmsford Public Schools.”​
