Town Meeting Approves Church Renovations

After questions and debate, the spring 2011 town meeting wraps up by approving final four articles.

Town Meeting met last night for its final night of a three night marathon session in which it finished addressing the 25 articles of the warrant for the Spring Session. Chelmsford residents heard articles about restoring the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, its town-owned clock tower, removing invasive weeds in Heart Pond, and the approval of a new road in town.

Here's a recap of the final articles addressed:

Article Vote Discussion 23- To use $5,576 from Community Preservation Fund Historic Preservation Reserve and $61,234 from Community Preservation Fund General Reserve to partially fund the repair and restoration of the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church steeple- church will pay remaining 50 percent of needed funds Passed by majority Several residents voiced concerns about the church only paying 50 percent, but others said that since the church is a historic building it is in the town's best interest to support the repairs.  22- To use $96,424 from the Community Preservation Fund Historical Preservation Reserve to repair the town clock which is in the First Parish clock tower Passed by majority Same concerns were raised as with article 23, but town's ownership of the clock led several residents to push for funding. 24- To use $25,000 from  the Community Preservation Fund Open Space and Recreation Reserve and/or the Community Preservation Fund General Reserve to fund the treatment and removal of invasive weeds from Heart Pond Passed by majority Concerns were raised about why there is not a public boat ramp which was a state recommendation. Safe chemical treatments and hand removal will be funded by the article and a maintennce plan will be implemented by the Heart Pond Association. 25- To accept Clara Way as an official street Passed unanimously The road will be added to the town's road inventory and receive maintenence from the town.
