About Town: Eagle Sightings, Book Sales and Nesting

Friends of the Concord Free Public Library book sale is Saturday.

Good morning and welcome to another wonderful Tuesday. Today happens to be the birthday of John F. Kennedy. Had it not been for that fateful day in November 1963, our 35th president would turn 95 today.

In happier news while still on the subject of great Americans, our most enthusiastic congratulations go to Concordians Andrew Blake Krupa and Hunter Frederick Montgomery. Both young men recently became Eagle Scouts, the highest and most prestigious achievement of the Boy Scouts of America. Excellent work Andrew and Hunter. Your families and community are very proud of you.

Jack Casey and his son Jack Casey have once again been placing American flags at the gravesites of soldiers in St. Bernard’s Cemetery. This year, they posted more than 900 flags . “It’s more and more every year,” said the Senior Casey, adding they adorn graves in the Catholic cemetery that honor soldiers who served in battle as far back as the Spanish-American War in 1898.

The end of May also signifies the end of Lady Slipper season in Concord. The beautiful pink and sadly, endangered,  orchids grow wild in yards, and conservation land  such asThoreau's Path on Brister's Hill, which is accessed through the Hapgood Wright Town Forest. It is owned and managed by the Walden Woods Project (www.walden.org).

Bob and Alice Lehmann ran through there last week and counted 60-plus lady slippers. The Lehmann’s also took their first plunge of 2012 into Walden Pond. “It was spontaneous,” said Alice, “and it was wonderful.”

Don’t forget about the Friends of the Book Sale this Saturday, June 2. Plenty of good reads and other media for unheard-of prices. All proceeds benefit the Concord Free Public Library. Volunteers are always welcome. If you can spare a few hours for a worthy cause, click here.

Nesting

And lastly, our arborvitaes is home again this year to another nest of robins. Here is a photo of the nest as it appeared early last week.

That’s it until next week. Stay tuned for Stefanie’s article on Thursday. I always enjoy reading Stefanie’s pieces. You can tell she’s enjoying herself while she writes.
