Some coaches might be satisfied with a 3-1 season-opening victory.
Do not place Lincoln-Sudbury coach Vicky Caburian in that company, as she watched her team defeat Monday afternoon, but still desired more.
“Not that, like, we want to run up the score or anything,” she said. “But if you set the ball so nicely, let’s finish those goals. Against better teams, hopefully we’ll score some more and do a little better job.”
While the game was the Warriors first of the season after two games were washed out last week, it was the Patriots second as their record falls to 0-2
“I actually was really proud of our team,” said C-C coach Betsy Smith. “L-S has a tradition of being very good in the open field, and moving the ball well. I thought in the first half, for sure, we sort of shut that down a bit and did a good job covering them man-to-man. But I think we got a little tired in the second half.”
Controlling from opening whistle, the Warriors scored less than six minutes into the contest on a penalty corner. Annika Nygren passed the corner ball to Ellie Landsman, who placed a shot on net. That was saved, but Landsman displayed her sang-froid grabbing the rebound and smacking it home for the 1-0 lead.
“She is great, a great player,” Caburian said about Landsman. “She’s been playing for a long time. She, obviously, has great potential and great skills.”
C-C had few scoring opportunities in the first half, but the best one arrived near the four-minute mark. Melissa Hoey fed the ball to Meg Teitelman on the right side of goal, but the shot went wide right.
Whitney Hartstone netted what proved to be the game winner three minutes into the second half scoring unassisted. Twelve minutes later, Nygren would add an insurance goal off a Landsman rebound.
The Patriots lone goal came with two minutes remaining as Sarah Bagley scored off a penalty corner.
