C-C Softball Pulls Off Close Win over Boston Latin

Patriots score early and hold off opponent for one-run, nail-biting victory.

The softball team did something Monday afternoon that it hasn’t accomplished yet this season – win a close, low-scoring game. The Patriots took an early two-run lead against Boston Latin Academy and held on for a 2-1 victory in non-league play.

Coach Lisa McGloin said she was pleased with how her team performed in the unfamiliar situation.

First close game we had and I was thrilled to pull this off, because we hadn’t pulled off a close game yet,” she said. “We had one (close game) against Acton, but that was a football score.”

The Patriots had trouble putting more runs on the board after going up 2-0 in the second inning. They stranded runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and sixth innings said. Even before C-C got on the scoreboard, runners were left in scoring position in the first inning.

“Held on, that’s one way to put it,” McGloin said. “We left a lot of runners on base. We got runners on but didn’t score.”

Only in the second inning was C-C able to push a few runs across. Angela DeBruzzi led off with a single and courtesy runner Sarah Bagley stole second. Following a lineout, Shannon Laughlin gave her team all the runs it would need with a two-run home run.

Laughlin finished the game 3-for-3 with the two RBIs and run scored. She was the lone Patriot with multiple hits.

Galen Kerr pitched all seven innings for Concord-Carlisle. She gave up the one run (unearned) on five hits to go with eight strikeouts and two walks.

“This was a well-played and clean-played game, so that was nice to do,” McGloin said.

Concord-Carlisle will return to Dual County League play against Tyngsborough School on Wednesday. The game is on the road.
