C-C Spring 2011 Season in Review
A look back at how the Concord-Carlisle athletic teams fared during the spring season.
As the calendar goes deeper into June, the spring sports season has concluded for the athletic teams of . While students at CCHS patiently count down the days until summer, the season has already changed for many of the Patriots.
It was another stellar spring for C-C teams on the field, court and diamond. The school was well represented in the MIAA postseason, as a few Patriots squads played deep into the playoffs.
None went deeper than the Patriots’ boys’ lacrosse squad – the final C-C team still standing last week when it played for the .

The Patriots met their old foe Medfield High School in the title game. It was the third straight year the two have met in the MIAA playoffs. And for the second year in a row, Medfield got the best of the Patriots to capture its second straight sectional championship.
Just getting there wasn’t easy for C-C. suffered during the regular season, it took three overtime periods for the Patriots to overcome Hingham in the semifinals.

But that just seemed to be more of the same, as this season. Relying on stellar defense, many of C-C’s contests were low-scoring affairs. There was the among the defensive battles.
Stellar performances on the lacrosse field weren’t reserved just for the boys’ team. C-C’s girls’ lax was a forced to be reckoned with throughout the spring as well.
The Patriots on a number of occasions this season. Even when their defense wasn’t at the top of its game, the Patriots could because of their offensive prowess.
Not even the competition in the MIAA North Division 1 sectional could slow the goal-scoring machine that was C-C this year. The Patriots earned the No. 3 seed and by posting 13 goals and beating Woburn by eight.
C-C continued flying high in the tournament until the sectional semifinals, when it ran into neighbor and perennial power Lincoln-Sudbury. In the game, the Patriots had , as the L-S offense burst out for 20 goals, while holding C-C to just five.
As usual, the Patriots’ softball team of the standings throughout the spring. After a 2010 season that ended in the semifinals of the state tournament, the Patriots were looking in their second season of competition in Division 1.
A very deep squad this spring, the Patriots seemed to be able to win all sorts of games. They against pesky opponents and at the plate to run away from the competition.
If anything, this season can be categorized as a growing year for the C-C baseball team. Relatively inexperienced, the Patriots dealt with plenty adversity and learned a lot along the way.
On the bright side, the Patriots they played. While there may have been a than coach John Kelly would have liked, C-C demonstrated high character in never giving up.
It was also a rebuilding year of sorts for the C-C boys’ tennis team. But the meaning of rebuilding for the Patriots may be a little different for the Patriots than other squads. Despite their overall youth, they still and performed exceedingly well.
At times, the Patriots also , picking up several 5-0 sweeps along the way. But they also had struggles as well. C-C was one of do eventual MIAA North D-1 sectional champion St. John’s Prep of Danvers.
Despite the ups and downs, the Patriots still landed a spot in the tournament, where they have been exceptionally comfortable in years past. This season, they where a loss to Newton South High School ended the 2011 season.
This was also a good spring for the C-C girls’ tennis team. Like the boys, the Patriots’ girls’ squad had some key contributors back and joined by some new faces.
The mixture did make for some success for the squad. It was playing particularly well to start the MIAA North Division 2 sectional, as the Patriots picked up a pair of 5-0 in their first two tournament matches.
In the quarterfinal round, to land a pot against Winchester for a shot at the sectional championship match. But the perennial power was too much for the Patriots.
Regrettably, Patch didn’t catch up with the C-C track and field teams as often as we would have liked, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a successful year for the Patriots. They were well represented at the MIAA postseason meets.
