Most people agree that the world benefits when a broad range of art and literature is represented in our classrooms, libraries, and museums. Why, then, do we still value culture and ideas produced in the West more than what is created by the “Rest”? In her new book, Move Over, Mona Lisa: Reimagining What We Read, Look at, and Learn, Peggy Levitt describes the inequality pipeline that keeps artists, writers, and thinkers from getting their fair share, as well as the remarkable people who are working to dismantle it.
Peggy is Chair and Professor of Sociology and the Mildred Lane Kemper Chair of Sociology at Wellesley College. She is also a co-founder of the Global (De)Centre.
