CCHS Girls' Hockey Loses to Lincoln-Sudbury, 1-3

Patriots' Effort Not The Strongest Says Coach.

High School girls’ hockey coach Lauren McAuliffe said that had the team put in a little more effort during play Wednesday night against Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, the outcome didn’t have to be a 3-1 loss.

“We played mediocre,” said McAuliffe. “I think we could have played a lot better. Still kind of working on a few things that we need to really improve on for the state tournament.

“Our consistency shift to shift and period to period. Just kind of going out there with a stronger effort; a stronger sense of urgency,” McAuliffe continued.

Lincoln-Sudbury got on the scoreboard quickly, scoring on Concord-Carlisle (11-7-1) sophomore goalie Michaela Haller less than two minutes into the game at 13:34.

Melinda Vercollone scored Lincoln-Sudbury’s first goal, finding the puck for the shot in a mess of players in front of the net. Marylou Cummings and Camilla Vercollone each assisted.

Lincoln-Sudbury continued its domination throughout the first period, putting more shots on net than the Patriots.

But, although Concord-Carlisle didn’t score in the first, sophomore Sarah Bagley and junior Jenny Robinson each gave impressive efforts attacking the net.

“They played hard all game,” McAuliffe said. “We get solid efforts from them every game really, but it’s not enough. It needs to be effort on playing hard every game. So hopefully we’ll get to that point.”

The Patriots made it a 1-all game at 8:59 in the second period.

Senior Chole Pasco passed to junior Greta White, who skated towards the center line and past Warrior Sarah Haberman.

White then shot the puck up the middle and it flew in front of the goal as Warriors Camilla Vercollone, Christina Welch and goalie Sarah Provost were defending against Patriot freshman Allie Colleran and Robinson. But Robinson was able to slap the puck in past Provost’s gloves for Concord-Carlisle’s score.

The celebration didn’t last long for the Patriots though, as Lincoln-Sudbury’s Nicole Lynch added two more goals in the third and final period, giving the Warriors the victory.

At 12:15, Lynch scored in front of the net with assists from Lesia Monahan and Julia Reinhold. And with 5:08 remaining Lynch scored with help from Haberman.

With roughly a minute left, Haller was taken out of goal, leaving an empty net for the Warriors to take advantage of. But Concord-Carlisle’s defense was on their game and kept Lincoln-Sudbury from adding a fourth goal.

McAuliffe said Concord-Carlisle has one more game in the regular season and she’s hoping the team will find a consistent effort.

“Hopefully we’ll be motivated just by having it be our senior night, our last regular season game before we go into the state tournament,” McAuliffe said.

“It always feels good to end the season on a high note because after that you’re either ending the season on a loss or you’re a state champion. And only one can be a state champion. So hopefully we can at least finish our regular season with a win and then try to do some damage in state.”

In its final regular season game, Concord-Carlisle hosts Andover High School at 3:40 p.m. on Monday afternoon.
