CCHS Girls Lacrosse Defeats Wildcats

The Patriots improved to 9-3 after defeating DCL League rival Weston last Thursday.

The  girls lacrosse team improved to 9-3 after defeating DCL League rival, the Weston Wildcats 14-13 at Doug White Field on Thursday.

The game began with the Wildcats taking an early lead and holding it for the first five minutes of play relying on Vanderbuilt-bound Senior Attack Emma Degras.  CC battled back with two nice goal/assist combinations by Kate Wyeth/Jill Carlton and Emma Brandhorst/Josie Morrison.  The following five minutes were deadlocked as each team went goal for goal with either team unable to pull ahead of the other. With just over five minutes remaining in the half the Patriots made their push as Jill Carlton, Jessie Castelline and Allie Barrett all created distance from their defenders for shooting tallies.

At the half CC held an 8- 5 lead.

The second half began with Weston scoring twice on fast breaks to bring the game back within one. The Patriots responded with a goal of their own as Emma Brandhorst took a pass on the resulting draw and broke free sprinting by the Weston defense for a nice tally. Degras continued to haunt CC with her speed thus allowing Weston to stay within reach of the Patriot’s slim 2 goal lead. CC’s defense worked hard to try to contain Degras, however #21 proved to be the Patriots nemesis the entire game.

Offensively, the Patriots continued to keep the pressure on Weston as Jennie Robinson (2 goals, 3 draw controls) made a great sidearm shot from the right edge beating Weston’s goalie on the far pipe. CC captain Jill Carlton (3 goals, 3 assist, 3 caused turnovers) made two crucial plays during the next five minutes as she first checked the ball away from a Weston defender  providing  an important CC turn over which resulted in a Patriot goal. Moments later Carlton drove a top corner shot  to the back of the net providing the Patriots a 3 goal lead and ultimately, the game winning goal.

“It was great to see senior leaders like Jill Carton and Jessie Castelline have such strong games," said Coach Morrison. "Jill scored the game winner for us today, and Jessie came up with clutch draw controls when we needed them.”

Weston remained relentless however as Degras scored again within the next 12 seconds taking the draw control , sprinting straight downfield, splitting the CC defense in two  for another tally.

CC Tri-Captain Jessie Castelline (3 goals, 1 assist, 5 draw controls) paid the favor right back on the following series with a beautiful goal on a nice feed from Carlton.

The back and forth battled continued into the final minutes as CC kept a 1 goal lead. With two and half minutes remaining the Patriots took final control winning the draw and  effectively stalling the offense with smart ball movement frustrating the Weston defense until the clock ran out.

CCHS Coach Paul Morrison pointed to the play of one of his unheralded defenders as a key to the victory.

“Jenny Robinson has played so strong this year," Morrison said. "She is a coach’s dream that will take on any role you ask her. I just started having Jenny take the draw in the past two games and she came up big today, we won 17 of 29 draw controls as a team and Jenny won three of those on her own. Jenny is our best defender game in and game out, and she doesn’t get the press that our scorers do so it was great to see her score two meaningful goals of her own “

CC is scheduled to play their next game Monday, May 7 at Marblehead.

Lincoln Sudbury 20 - Concord Carlisle 4

The Lincoln Sudbury Warriors put on a dominating performance last Tuesday defeating the CCHS Patriots 20-4. The Warriors high speed/high precision attack was too much for the Patriots to handle. Sophomore Emma Brandhorst played well for CCHS scoring a goal, winning a draw control, and causing three turnovers. Josie Morrison, Kate Wyeth, and Allie Barrett also netted goals for the Patriots. Jessie Castelline contributed to the CCHS effort by winning four draw controls and causing 1 turnover.

Coach Paul Morrison reflected on the Patriot loss saying "LS has really dominated us over the past couple of seasons, and I was hoping we could compete with them. It wasn't meant to be today and the game was over by halftime. The only positive we can take from the game is that LS showed us how difficult an opponent you can be when you play in high gear for fifty minutes. We need to strive to be that intense when we play. Otherwise we need to put that game behind us and get ready to finish out the second half of our DCL Small season."
