CCHS Girls Lacrosse Goes 8-0 with Win Against Lexington

Pats double up to Minutemen for 14-7 victory, continuing undefeated streak.

The girls of Concord-Carlisle High School’s lacrosse team rallied back from a 5-5 tie at halftime to win by seven goals against Lexington High School. The final being 14-7, with the Patriots improving their undefeated season to 8-0.

“I think (Melissa Mariano is) the best goalie in our (DC) league” said CCHS coach Paul Morrison. “She’s a senior. She was just outstanding today. We won by seven and if she doesn’t make those saves we don’t win.

“Also, defensively, Caitlin Guiney and Marin Epstein and Emma Randall, Jenny Robinson, Caitie Standish and Annie Bannon were really solid.”

Concord-Carlisle scored three in a row at the start of the second half.

“We talked about what we can do to be a better team in the second half. It’s not about what (Lexington is) doing. We talk about what we need to do. And not what we’re doing wrong, just what we can do to step it up and be better. And the results are what happened,” said Morrison.

Rebecca Olsen (4 goals) put the Pats up 6-5 with her goal at 23:17 and Amy Wyeth (2 goals) netted the team’s seventh at 21:12 with assists by Kate Wyeth and Josie Morrison.

On the next play, Concord-Carlisle won the draw and the ball was slung into senior captain Jamie Potter’s net. Potter (3 goals, 2 assists) bolted up the center and passed to Jill Carlton (2 goals, 2 assists) who scored to give Concord-Carlisle a three-goal edge, 8-5, at 20:59.

“We were tied at the half 5-5 because (Lexington) was playing a good game,” Morrison said. “Nothing we were doing wrong, but we just decided the second half, game was on the line, what can we do to make it better? I think the first thing we did was we buckled down on defense because we only gave up two goals in the second half.

“And then the second thing that we do well is we possess the ball. We don’t turn the ball over when we get it down there. We’re patient. We work out wide so that we get good shots on goal. We don’t try to force it in there and take bad shots. We’re patient with the ball.”

Up by three goals, 9-6, with still 13:50 remaining in play, Potter, again, fiercely ran up the center, head held high and confident. She passed to senior captain Lindsay Cook (2 goals) for the Patriots’ 10th goal.

“What I’m happy about my team is; Lexington has 18 players. I have 23; we carry a big team. Everybody but our backup goalie played today,” Morrison said.

“I have confidence that my second stringers can do as good of a job as the first line people. And they all believe in each other and it’s showing with our results.

“Everybody gets in; they get in during meaningful moments, so it’s showing.”

With just seven seconds left, Amy Wyeth put in the Patriots’ 14th goal. Lexington tried to take the ball for their eighth goal, but time ran out and Concord-Carlisle won.

For the Patriots, Caroline Donelan had one goal and one assist, Alexa Barrett had two assists and Courtney McCauley had one assist.

For Lexington, senior captain and attacker Diana Hines, senior attacker Amanda Bouchard, sophomore defender/attacker Dana Dimodica and freshman attacker Fiona Fitzgerald each scored one goal. Senior captain and attacker Meghan McNabb recorded a hat trick and one assist.

Next up, Concord-Carlisle heads to Lincoln-Sudbury on May 3 at 4 p.m.

“We’re ranked number 7 in the state and they’re ranked number 4,” Morrison said. “It’s just game by game. Your next opponent is your best opponent.

“So Lincoln-Sudbury is always a great team, we historically struggle with them and we just need, again, to not worry about Lincoln-Sudbury, we just need to be concerned with what Concord-Carlisle can do and that’s the way we’re going to approach the game.”
