Text to update the website:
The Environmental Protection Agency has secured money to fund the disassembly and removal of the buildings at the Starmet Superfund Site in Concord. The Beryllium metals division of the company was sold and has left the site, so there are only a few workers remaining in Concord. The remaining Starmet contractors are cooperating with the cleanup contractor demaximus inc., and they are working together to plan an orderly handover when the last Starmet contractors leave the site later this Fall. A site manager for the building removal project has been hired and is at the site daily. 24 hour security at the site will continue uninterrupted during the handover and cleanup.
During the handover, outside activities will be visible at the site. The cleanup contractor will be putting work trailers at the site. They will be preparing to reinforce the roof and heat the buildings for the winter time. In the next few weeks, they will be setting up new power lines and natural gas lines to power the lights, fire suppression, and heating system. They may also begin reinforcing the roof before the handover.
The cleanup contractor is also preparing to take over security at the site. They will also be using mowers, tree trimmers and wood chippers to clear brush and small trees along the fence lines and near the buildings so that security officers will be able to see better. They will also be upgrading some of the fencing.
All of these activities are happening in uncontaminated areas. Regular outdoor dust monitoring will be continuing. Outdoor activities will happen during regular working hours on weekdays. The Concord Fire Department is working closely with the contractor to ensure that all work is done safely.
If the schedule continues according to plan, the contractors will spend the Winter stabilizing the inside of the buildings and removing loose flammable materials. In the Spring and Summer of 2012 large machines and furniture will be packaged, removed from the buildings, and shipped out for disposal. Actual disassembly of the buildings will not begin before the Fall of 2012, and probably will not start until 2013.
