APPLAUDD is a community education series which is an innovative, multi-session prevention workshop that educates parents of youth grades 5 through 12 about adolescent brain development and how abusing substances can affect their academic potential. It increases parent-teen communication skills and teaches specific evidence-based parenting strategies proven to reduce substance abuse. APPLAUDD also changes social norms about underage drinking and parental social hosting.
Marilyn G. Belmonte, a specialist in Drug Abuse and Prevention and Co-Chairperson of the Burlington Drug and Alcohol Task Force, will be presenting APPLAUDD and leading question & answer periods and small group discussions.
The first of 4 sessions will take place on November 1st and will deal with the "power of parenting" when it comes to preventing substance abuse, how to recognize abuse, and trends in teen drug abuse. There will also be information about the most commonly used substances.
