Explore a little known chapter in American Maritime History. Lightships, or floating lighthouses, are vessels that were used to mark shoals, harbor entrances and ship channels where physical or financial considerations would not allow the use of a lighthouse. Few of these ships still exist.
Join Wayne Kirklin, Associate Historian with the Overfalls Maritime Museum Foundation in Lewes, Delaware, for an illustrated talk on the life and use of these vessels. Mr. Kirklin, a retired banker and college professor, has been a boater for many years and serves as a guide on the lightship Overfalls in Lewes, Delaware. He is the author of Lightships: Floating Lighthouses of the Mid-Atlantic.
