Sleepless Nights

Kayo Burmon, a painter and printmaker at Emerson Umbrella, invites us to explore her art by explaining, “As a young child, I found great artistic satisfaction in melting crayons on the radiators of my parents’ home. The colors, textures, lines and shapes, as well as the fragrance of the melting wax captivated me.  Fifty years later, I am still fascinated by the same things. The crayons have been replaced by oil paints and inks, the fragrance by that of “odorless” paint thinner and the radiators by paper, canvas, and board.

“A lifetime of experiences, relationships, emotions and observations has added greatly to my visual repertoire, and hard work, as well as a number of fine teachers, has increased my skill.

“In all my work, I wish to connect with the observer in a slightly intimate way. Perhaps it is the image itself that provokes a response, or the layering of color and texture. For me, this is the difference between ‘Art’ and ‘Pretty Pictures.’

“’One Artist’s SLEEPLESS NIGHTS’ is a collection of very diverse works created over the last few years. Sleepless nights are common among artists. It is no wonder. Days are replete with action, colors, patterns, images, shapes, sounds, emotions, light and dark, people, stories, news, illness, birth, death, experiences-both painful and pleasant, nature’s best and worst … To distill all this in a way that can be translated into a work of art is an enigma. The result? Sleepless nights.”

Kayo’s exhibit at Emerson Umbrella Center for the Art’s Gallery runs from October 3 – November 12.  Meet Kayo at her opening on Wednesday, October 10, 6-8 pm.
