Join us on as we celebrate St. Patrick's Day at the Old Manse. On Saturday and Sunday, March 17 and 18 at 1 pm and 3 pm, we present "The Irish in Concord." By means of a brief lecture and a special tour of this revolutionary home, we'll explore the role of the immigrant Irish as domestic servants, as railroad builders, and as local businessmen and women. You will also enjoy some Irish dietary treats, and a special St. Patrick's Day savings of 25% off all titles in our bookstore. Reservations suggested.
The special event includes a 30 minute presentation by site manager Tom Beardsley, followed by a servant-oriented tour of the historic old house, and a free Irish buffet.
The presentation discusses early Irish immigration to Concord, the life and central role played in Concord by eighteenth century Irish philanthropist Hugh Cargill, railroad construction in the 1840s, and the Irish as seen through the eyes of Manse residents and aficionados Nathaniel Hawthorne, Thoreau, Emerson and Margaret Fuller. The tour will take you into rarely seen nooks and crannies of this ancient house.
