Holy Family Parish in Concord, Massachusetts, will be hosting Paulist Father Tom Kane on Wednesday, December 5 at 7:30 PM in the lower level of the Parish Center in West Concord. This is being offered as part of our year long series Vatican II Revisited and in this session Father Kane will further explore the Council’s Constitution on the Liturgy Sacrosanctum Concilium.
Father Kane, Associate Professor of Liturgy and Preaching at Boston College’s School of Theology and Ministry, has spent much of his career exploring how liturgy and culture intersect. His particular area of study is the intersection of liturgy and movement / dance. While all worship involves some choreography in terms of motion, processions, ritual gestures, etc. Father Kane has studied extensively liturgical movement and dance both in the churches of Africa and the South Pacific. This work has been collected in two videos produced by Paulist Press – The Dancing Church.
In this session we will view scenes from both movies and learn how movement and dance are part of our worship and how these enrich our lives as humans and as worshippers. After earning an MA in liturgical studies at the Catholic University of America in 1975, Tom was ordained the same year. After ordination he was assigned to the Campus Ministry of Ohio State University from which he also earned a doctoral degree in ritual studies. Tom came to Boston in 1981 to join the faculty of the Weston School of Theology, which is now part of the School of Theology and Ministry at BC. This is sure to be both an informative and enjoyable presentation.
