Women's Voices

Too often women’s voices are not given the respect they deserve interpersonally, in the workplace, and in the larger culture.  There is research that tells us that many adolescent girls suppress their own voices in response to cultural expectations as well as family pressures.  It has been demonstrated that exploring and developing our physical voices helps us to expand our internal resources and increase coping skills.  Voice Movement Therapy is an expressive arts therapy that focuses on exploring our vocal capabilities and developing them in a way that increases confidence and range of expression.

This course will use discussion and Voice Movement Therapy techniques to increase our ability to communicate clearly and effectively.  Participants will learn breathing techniques that help them center in their body and support their voice, explore and expand their vocal capacities, and learn to connect body and voice so that their words are connected to their underlying emotions.  No previous experience with public speaking or singing is needed.  The only requirement is a willingness to explore your voice in a safe and fun environment.
Pre-registration required.

Deborah Crane grew up in a household with older siblings and became used to the feeling of not having a voice in the conversation. Her childhood ambition, to be able to sing just like Julie Andrews, led to a series of traditional voice lessons. Through her training in Voice Movement Therapy Deborah has reclaimed both her ability to be heard and a voice with power, range, and flexibility that she never dreamed possible. Having reclaimed her creative self, she completed her M.A. in Theatre in 2005 and has performed in cabaret and musical theatre. Deborah has over twenty years experience as a behavioral health counselor and has maintained a private practice in Voice Movement Therapy for over ten years. http://www.creativevoicework.com/aboutdc.html
