Oh, baby, I just love it when local people hit it big, and then come back to visit us little folk! It happened last week when actor Chris Evans – you might know him as Captain America – came to Fenn to chat with the boys about life on the Left Coast. I have no doubt the Fenn boys were dazzled to have the chance to ask such serious questions as “When you have to kiss someone in front of the camera, do you feel uncomfortable?” After all, inquiring preteen boy minds want to know.
What’s really nice is that Chris was willing to spend time talking to the boys and recounting his early years living in the area. He grew up in Sudbury and honed his early acting skills right here in Concord, believe it or not, at Concord Youth Theater. I’ve mentioned CYT before – they offer theater classes and give local kids a chance to have their own Glee experience – so it’s very cool to know that they’re also the springboard for some pretty awesome talent. And as frequently happens in these situations, it’s a family affair: Chris’s mom Lisa is the artistic director over at CYT.
But the Chris Evans/CYT connection goes even further: when he was in Boston filming the movie “What’s Your Number?” with Anna Faris, CYT got the nod to collect local people to appear as extras. As a result, a number of the CYT kids got their chance to be in the movie and experience their own stardom. Oh, OK, and some adults even took advantage of the opportunity – I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I believe I’m in the background of a critical scene that takes place in a tearoom. Way in the background.

No matter, it’s always nice when people remember their roots. I’m sure Chris left in his wake a group of boys with stars in their eyes.
Happy Birthday, Frank!

Another local guy had a big day last week: my friend Frank McGillin celebrated a very special birthday on 11/11/11. I won’t tell you how old he is – that’s not polite – but I will tell you he’s no longer 50, and he seemed pretty happy about that. He celebrated with dancing and singing and balloons and champagne and cake and of course family and friends — all the elements you need for a fabulous birthday. I hope the coming year brings all good things for him!
