Meet the Artist: Brigitte Livet

Brigitte Livet’s life has been shaped by art from the very beginning. Born in Clermont-Ferrand, France, into a family deeply rooted in fine art and classical music, she grew up surrounded by creativity. Her artistic lineage includes celebrated musicians, sculptors, and close connections to the Surrealist master Salvador Dalí through family members who worked alongside him.

Brigitte studied at l’École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in France and continued her artistic education in North Africa. Extensive travel has further enriched her work, influencing her distinctive use of color, form, and texture. Today, she is an artist in residence at the Bradford Mill, where her studio is filled with large oil paintings, watercolors, mixed-media collages, and sculptural works.

Her art has been described as vibrant, intuitive, and deeply personal—an expression of memory, imagination, and lived experience.

An Art Practice Guided by Imagination

Brigitte believes that art begins with intuition. “Everything is imagination,” she says—and that belief is at the heart of her teaching. Rather than copying or following rigid rules, students are encouraged to trust their instincts, explore materials freely, and develop their own visual language.

Her acclaimed exhibition Tout est Imagination reflected this philosophy, celebrating creativity as a deeply individual and joyful process.

About the Mixed-Media Collage Classes

These winter holiday classes focus on mixed-media collage, a contemporary art form that combines paper, paint, fabric, photographs, and found objects to create layered, textured compositions. Working on canvas or wood, students will experiment with color, shape, and materials to produce original artwork.

Collage—derived from the French coller, meaning “to glue”—can be abstract, narrative, or purely expressive. It is accessible, playful, and endlessly creative.

What You’ll Explore

Participants will be introduced to a variety of collage techniques, including:

  • Paper Collage using torn and cut papers, magazines, and textured materials
  • Photomontage to tell stories or preserve memories through images
  • Mixed-Media Collage incorporating paint, fabric, and found objects
  • Assemblage, a three-dimensional extension of collage

Hands-on instruction will cover composition, layering, texture, and professional adhesion techniques, with an emphasis on experimentation and personal expression.

What You’ll Gain

By the end of the class, students will:

  • Create original mixed-media collage artworks
  • Develop rich textures and expressive backgrounds
  • Learn how to use collage as a storytelling and compositional tool
  • Gain confidence working intuitively across materials

Most importantly, students leave with a renewed sense of creative freedom—and artwork that is uniquely their own.
