Patriots Girls' Lacrosse Runs Away from Masconomet

C-C overcomes early deficit for sixth straight win to start the season.

Not much has slowed the girls’ lacrosse team this year. On Wednesday, it appeared Masconomet Regional of Topsfield may have solved the problem by taking an early two-goal lead.

But, as they’ve done numerous times already this year, the Patriots rallied and ran away with a non-league victory. C-C led by four goals at halftime and kept rolling in the second half, eventually winning 20-11.

Coach Paul Morrison compared it to the Patriots’ earlier matchup against Westford Academy. In that game, C-C (6-0) held a four-goal lead at the break, struggled in the second half, but held on to win by two.

This time the Patriots responded nicely.

“It was a great game. We scored the first goal, but then they scored three in a row,” Morrison said Wednesday night. “At halftime, I said to the girls, ‘Is this going to be like Westford again or are you going to take control of the game?’ I was very proud of their effort.”

For C-C, it was the third time the team topped 20 goals in a game this season. The Patriots accomplished the feat in the season opener against Bedford (24) on April 5 and against Tyngsborough (20) on April 7. Their lowest total so far was 13 in a key win over Dual County League rival Acton-Boxborough on April 6.

“Yeah, we couldn’t be happier,” Morrison said of how well the Patriots have played early in the season. “We have 23 girls and most of them play in every game.”

Against Masconomet, the Patriots were led by senior captains Jamie Potter and Lindsay Cook. The latter contributed seven goals, while the former turned in a spectacular performance with five goals and five assists.

Jill Carlton also had a strong game, contributing four goals and three assists of her own. Jessie Castelline had two goals and three assists, while single goals came from Kate Wyeth, Sophie Tilles and Allie Barrett, who also had one assist.

Melissa Mariano and Greta White split time in net for the Patriots, combining for nine saves. Mariano had six and White added three in relief.

Morrison also said defender Caitlyn Guiney played well.

Next up, C-C travels to Weston on Tuesday for a showdown that will determine which team takes over sole possession of first place in the DCL small division. Both enter the game undefeated. The Patriots will return home to face Wayland next Thursday.
