PHOTOS: School Officials Participate in Pajama Party to Open Alcott Read-a-Thon

Alcott Principal Sharon Young and Superintendent Diana Rigby joined more than 200 students and parents for a pajama party last Friday, March 1, at Alcott School.

More than 200 parents and students donned pajamas and headed to Alcott School last Friday night to kick-off this year’s read-a-thon.

The event featured a book fair in the hallway, silent reading in the gym and special guests Principal Sharon Young and Superintendent Diana Rigby.

An ambitious goal of 525,000 pages has been set for this year’s read-a-thon, which has the theme “Once Upon a Read-a-Thon,” and is designed to promote reading and literacy in Concord’s young students. All in-school and at-home reading is logged and counts toward the goal.

From a press release announcing participating in the pajama party kickoff:

Students are encouraged to read by setting reading goals within their classrooms and holding mini-read a thons. Lastly, the parents received tips and advice from the PTG about how to integrate quiet reading time into daily routines at home as well.  The school believes that if the teachers, PTG and parents work together to get students excited about reaching the goal of the program, that this will ultimately help to promote a lifelong love of books and reading.
