Robert Barney in Organ Recital at Trinity Episcopal Church, Sunday, Sept 28

Robert Barney plays organ works of Soler, Bach, Brahms & Franck to celebrate 20 years of music ministry at Trinity.

On Sunday, September 28 at 4 PM at Trintiy Episcopal Church in Concord, organist Robert Barney presents a solo recital on the Aeolian Skinner Organ and the Huntington Chamber Organ in the main sanctuary celebrating his 20 years of music ministry at Trinity.

Jim Barkovic (Holy Family Parish & West Concord Union Church), joins Robert in the “Concerto in C Major”, written for two organs by Padre Antonio Soler, perhaps the best known and most famous Spanish Baroque organist. Other works on the program focus on Mr. Barney’s love of German and French organ repertoires, including J.S. Bach’s “Prelude and Fugue in C Major”, Christa Rakich’s “Partita on Lobe den Herren in the style of Johann Pachelbel”, Johannes Brahms’ “Prelude and Fugue in G minor” and Cesar Franck’s “Chorale III”, one of the greatest treasures of organ literature.

Littleton resident Robert Barney maintains an active musical career as a choral director, performer, teacher, and church musician. He has served as Director of Music for Trinity Episcopal Church in Concord since 1994, and has taught piano, organ, and voice for more than 30 years. Mr. Barney has performed organ recitals in the United States and Europe, and for conventions of the Organ Historical Society, The American Guild of Organists, and the Association of Anglican Musicians, focusing especially on historic instruments. In May 2014 he was elected Sub-Dean of the Boston Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Mr. Barney has served as Artistic Director for the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus from 1985-1997, Associate Conductor (1999-2004) and Interim Artistic Director (2004-2006) for the Treble Chorus of New England, and in September 2009, was appointed Artistic Director of Youth pro Musica, the Boston area’s oldest choral program for young singers. Also an accomplished tenor, he has given solo performances at Wellesley College and the Connecticut Early Music Festival and he is a founding member/artistic advisor for the Seraphim Singers. Mr. Barney holds degrees from Concordia College and The New England Conservatory of Music; his mentors include Ruth Taylor, Ralph Schultz, Robert Owen, Robert Schunemann, Donald Teeters, Frank Taylor and Yuko Hayashi.

Jim Barkovic, active in the Boston area as a conductor, pianist, organist and accompanist, directs the Westford Chorus and is assistant conductor and accompanist for the Spectrum Singers. He also serves as Music Director at West Concord Union Church and Holy Family Parish, and is Chapel Organist at Middlesex School (all in Concord MA). Jim received his Master of Music in Piano Performance from the New England Conservatory. A native of Minnesota, Jim did his undergraduate work at St. Olaf College, with concentrations in music history and theory.

This celebration concert at Trinity Episcopal Church, 81 Elm Street in Concord, is free and open to the public; a free will offering will be taken to benefit the music program at Trinity.
