Women's hockey league heats up 12th summer; Concord Open raises money for local families; CCHS must replace its artificial athletic fields; summer softball season comes to an end.

The Concord Women's Summer Hockey League has been pulling players out of the heat and onto the ice of Valley Sports for over a decade. This summer marks the 12th year the league has been in operation.

The CWSHL consists of six teams – Vegas, Purple, White, Orange, Teal and Maroon – that play three games each week. The ladies take to the Valley Sports ice each Sunday night.

Some of the league's players are relative newcomers to the sport, while others have been lifelong devotees.

Earlier this week, Concord-Carlisle High School athletic director Barry Haley spoke about replacing the school's artificial turf athletic fields, which were installed in 2008.

Pennsylvania-based Sprinturf offered to replace the fields after testing revealed higher than normal lead readings. Haley said the lead levels were still well below the federal guidelines, but the fields will still be replaced as a precaution.

On Thursday, the Concord-Carlisle Patriots wrapped up their 14B MiddleEssex summer softball league schedule. C-C fell to a superb Bedford team 21-2 in the season finale.
