  • After residents called a flood the week before worst in 50 years, officials assessed the situation and deemed damage relatively small. No considerable loss of goods or damage to property was found.
  • Frank Pierce’s shoe store was dismantled and cleared of remaining stock. Among the finds in the store were 50-year-old handmade shoes and wall posters of public events.
  • The grand elm tree that at the corner of Court Lane and Monument Street fell, crashing across the hood of a car.
  • High school students prepared for productions of The Happy Journey by Thornton Wilder, The Violin-Maker of Cremona by Francois Coppee, and A Wedding by John Kirkpatrick.

50 Years Ago…

  • Macone’s Sporting Goods Company owner Joe Macone purchased the vacant supermarket on Lowell Road.
  • William A. Small of Stratford, CT was named principal of the Ripley School.

  • Spurned by a desire for acquiring more open space, the Long Range Plan Committee told town officials that they needed to further pursue a real estate sales tax.
  • Selectmen voted to suspend the liquor license of A Different Drummer. The suspension came after the restaurant served alcohol to an employee after hours.
  • After 10 years of municipal experience that included time as an assistant town manager in Holden, Jacquelyn Kelly was appointed acting town manager of Concord.
  • Wilbur Walworth of Concord and Gene Sheftelman of Carlisle donated dental equipment, including a dentist’s chair, to sister city San Marcos.
