Two CCHS Boys Lacrosse Players Injured in Win Against Wayland

Patriots Improve to 15-1 on the Season.

While the Concord-Carlisle High School boys’ lacrosse team improved to 15-1 on the season, with a 9-2 home win over Wayland High School on Thursday, the Patriots may have lost two senior captains to injuries.

“I think he broke his collarbone,” said CCHS coach Tom Dalicandro, speaking of senior captain attackman Seth Bird. “That’s a tough loss because he’s our best player.”

Senior captain defenseman Peter George was also sidelined in the game, limping off the field in the fourth quarter with 8:55 to play.

But, Dalicandro doesn’t believe George’s situation to be as worrisome.

“I think he just got hit in the shin with the ball, I think,” Dalicandro said. “I think he’ll be alright.”

From the start, both Concord-Carlisle and Wayland were playing fierce, with a handful of hard hits causing the referees to throw down yellow penalty flags. But neither team’s rough play produced many goals early on.

“They’re a good defensive team, Wayland,” Dalicandro said. “They really pressured our attack and played aggressive.”

But the Patriots’ offense started to get going near the end of the first quarter, as Concord-Carlisle netted nine goals in a row to blank the Warriors to close out the third quarter.

Junior midfielder Mike O’Brien scored the game’s first goal with just 1:31 left in the first. His shot went past Wayland goalkeeper Lexi Haigney.

Senior attackman Ben Lesser (two goals, one assist) made a straight shot for Concord-Carlisle at 8:00, then senior midfielder Brendan Gay put the team up 3-0 with a close score at 6:29. Junior midfielder Kevin Delehey added the Patriots’ fourth goal at 5:12.

Concord-Carlisle continued charging, scoring three more goals in the second quarter to go up 7-0 at halftime.

The team’s final goal was scored at 4:59 in the third quarter, when Lesser passed from the right wing to Gay, who was standing in front of the net.

But with the fourth just starting and Concord-Carlisle’s Bird driven off the field, Wayland showed some life, scoring its two goals in the final quarter.

“We played well defensively again,” Dalicandro said. “We had a good second quarter, (but) then the third quarter was tough because Seth got hurt. I think it just took everything out of our team.”

At 10:10, Wayland senior Kevin Goodfellow threw a low sweeping shot from the right wing against Concord-Carlisle senior goalie Steven Saul, finally getting a Wayland attempt through.

And Wayland’s second score came from freshman Roby Williams with 5:55 remaining. Williams sliced a shot from wide left that went past Saul.

Wayland had momentum in the fourth quarter, but the Warriors weren’t able to come back as the team fell to 10-8 on the season and 6-4 in the Dual County League small division.

Dalicandro said Saul played a large part in Concord-Carlisle’s win, as he made important stops on Wayland’s chances.

“Saul made a lot of nice saves; seemed to do a good job today for us, so that was good,” Dalicandro said. “He’s a senior; (it was) our last home game. So it was good.”

Next up, Concord-Carlisle heads to Newton North High School on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the teams’ second to last game of the regular season.
