The Warriors won the first half by controlling the majority of draws. After two Patriot scoring opportunities, Wayland went on a 3 goal scoring run before CC Midfielder Jessie Castelline would sink a low shot to the back of the net. CC had several scoring opportunities early in the game however Wayland’s all-star goalie Rachel Massicotte was quick to handle the high shots.  Although the Patriots struggled with draw controls in the first half, they were resilient keeping the game with 3 goals. A Wayland power play goal late in the first half sent the Patriots into the break trailing 8-4.

“Wayland played with desire all afternoon, and it was apparent that they felt they had a lot to prove after we beat them back on April 10. We had been down before in games this season so I knew the kids would never give up.”

The Patriots made positional changes on the draw control to begin the second half and quickly took possessions of the ball allowing them back in the game. Jessie Castelline (5 draw controls, 1 goal) won several early draws resulting in fast break goals. It was clear Wayland could not keep up with CC’s fast transitional game as the Patriots narrowed the lead down to 1.  Jill Carlton (4 goals), Emma Brandhorst (3 goals, 2 assists) and Allie Barrett (3 goals, 1 assist) led the charge while Josie Morrison added a goal of her own.

In an attempt to slow the game down and take precious time off the clock, Wayland went into a settled offense. CC countered by playing more aggressive on the ball drawing a foul that resulted in a Wayland goal.

With just under 2 minutes remaining and Wayland up by two, CC’s Jill Carlton cut the lead back to one with a pretty quick stick assisted by a Emma Brandhorst from behind the net.  With just over a minute remaining Wayland took the ensuing draw control and effectively ran out the remaining clock time securing the one goal win.

“The team is disappointed because for the second year in a row we had the chance to control our destiny and win the DCL Small outright," said Coach Morrison. "Last year we split the title with Weston, and one of our goals for this season was to win it outright. Now we have to have help from other teams to reach that goal of an outright league championship. The kids pressed hard the entire second half and we had chance to steal the game from Wayland. Jessie Castelline and Allie Barrett stood out for us today, but in the end we have to tip our hat to Wayland because they withstood or pressure and pulled out the win”.
