DANVERS, MA — Despite objection from some members of the public, one of the largest wine retailers is coming to Danvers
Following a lengthy discussion Tuesday night, the selectmen voted 3-1-1 to approve a liquor license transfer from Waterfront Wine and Spirits on Water Street to Total Wine & More, to be located at the Liberty Tree Mall. The store is expected to be the fourth for the Maryland-based company. They operate locations in Natick and Everett, with a Shrewsbury store planned.

Selectman Dan Bennett voted against the transfer and Gardner Trask abstained.
Total Wine will move into the space formerly occupied by the Sports Authority. The store will use about 28,000 sq. ft. of the building with another store taking the unused area and entrance from the mall. The liquor store will not have direct access from the mall and can only be entered through the parking lot.

About $1 million has been invested in the store and 50 employees will be hired, representatives from the company said.
The location and prospect of a new store drew complaints from residents. Those speaking in opposition of the store said a big box retailer could force local businesses to shut down and the location at the mall may increase underage drinking.
“You’re going to attract destination shoppers from New Hampshire, Boston, Gloucester. I think the overall plan you have fits into the area. Regrettably, it’s going to cause some competition but I challenge (the liquor stores) to diversify your plans,” Selectman Bill Clark said.
Edward Cooper, the vice president of public affairs and community relations for the company, told the board that they have only had 12 violations across 130 stores for selling to minors during their 25 year history and employees receive bonuses for checking IDs.
