Danvers Boys' Basketball Champs to Get Their Own Road Signs

Five things to know today, Wednesday, June 19.

Today is Wednesday, June 19. Here are five things to know today in Danvers.

  1. Promotions: Four veteran members of the Danvers Fire Department will be officially sworn in to their new posts on Thursday at the Senior Center. The ceremony is at 6 p.m. The promotions are for Deputy Chief James McPherson, Captain P. James Brooks, Captain Robert Amerault and Lieutenant James Shafner.
  2. Road signs of the champs: The Danvers Touchdown Club, not content with just a dinner in the team's honor, will now be putting up signs around town to congratulate the two-time Falcons boys' basketball state champions. Club president Dana Michael Hagan appeared before the selectmen last night for permission to erect four signs and walked away with an OK to place up to seven signs around town. Selectman Dan Bennett mentioned that Danvers Kiwanis uses seven signs at key locations to advertise certain events and the same was granted to the Touchdown Club. Four of the spots will be near Essex Aggie, Connors Farm, Water Street near the Peabody line and the intersection of Conant and Elliott streets. The signs, which will be the size of speed limit signs, will read: "Home of Boys' Basketball State Champs, 2012-2013," said Hagan. "I’m sick of driving into Beverly and seeing their signs," quipped Selectman Dianne Langlais. "Other towns have them and I love them." Town Manager Wayne Marquis added that the Public Works Department would be happy to install the signs.
  3. Water and sewer rates: The Danvers Board of Water & Sewer Commissioners will hold a public hearing this Thursday to set new water and sewer rates in town. The hearing will take place at 7 p.m. in the conference room of the Department of Public Works' business office at 2 Burroughs St.
  4. Town boards today: The Danvers Traffic Advisory Committee meets this afternoon (2 p.m.) in the police station. You can find the agenda here.
  5. Don't forget the general special election between Republican Gabriel Gomez and Democrat Edward Markey is June 25. Polls in town will be open from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. The winner will be the newest U.S. Senator to represent Massachusetts.

Here's a sixth thing to keep in mind -- the Danvers Family Festival is in full swing this week. There are a number of events happenign this weekend. You can check out the schedule here online.
