Manson Takes 1st for Shot Put as 'Emerging Elite' at Nationals

Today is Tuesday, June 17. Here are five things to know today in Danvers.

  1. Danvers High's Joe Manson out-threw the competition in Greensboro, N.C. this past weekend at the New Balance National Outdoor Championships. The Falcons senior and recent graduate took 1st place in the Emerging Elite category for boys' shot put with a toss of 57 feet, 7 inches. Manson also competed in the Emerging Elite discus throw and placed 24th.
  2. DanversCARES recognized a handful of its "outstanding" members earlier this month with special awards for their leadership in town and with the nonprofit organization. Allison Wentworth was honored for "Outstanding Youth Leadership," Meghan Kellard for "Outstanding Service as an Atlas & Athena Student-Athlete Mentor," Olivia Perez for "Outstanding Service as a HRMS DanversCARES Youth Leader," Daniel Bennett for "Outstanding Support & Policy Work" and Connie Pawlak for "Outstanding Support of DanversCARES."
  3. Town boards today: The Danvers Housing Authority meets at 4:30 p.m. in the conference room of the Community Building at 14 Stone St., the Preservation Commission meets at 7 p.m. in the Town Manager's Conference room at Town Hall (you can find the agenda here), and the Board of Selectmen also meet at 7 p.m. in the Toomey Room.   4. Don't forget the general special election between Republican Gabriel Gomez and Democrat Edward Markey is June 25. Polls in town will be open from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. The winner will be the newest U.S. Senator to represent Massachusetts.
