Break-in, Thefts and a 'Suspicious Man in a Canoe'

The following was provided by the Danvers Police Department. Where charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following are excerpts from reports in the Danvers Police Department press log from July 1-2.

Monday, July 1

  • 5:22 p.m. Report of a break-in to a home on Longbow Road through an open rear window.
  • 7:33 p.m. Report of a theft from a vehicle on North Putnam Street.
  • 9:23 p.m. Report of a theft from a vehicle at the YMCA on Pickering Street.
  • 9:50 p.m. Report of suspicious activity at Plains Park. Two 20-year-old Danvers males were placed into protective custody. 

Tuesday, July 2

  • 8:16 a.m. Report of an erratic operator who crossed the center line on Maple Street near the Middleton line. Police checked the area, but did not find the vehicle.
  • 12:53 p.m. Report of a suspicious person on Dayton Street -- an 80-year-old while male on a bike. Leonard Melvin, 59, of Boxford, was arrested on a warrant.
  • 8:37 p.m. Report of a suspicious man in a canoe on Conant Street. Police checked the area, but did find not anything.
  • 10:34 p.m. Report of prostitution and/or drug activity at Motel 6. Police said that was unfounded.
