Brutole’s Owners Plan to Appeal Liquor License Revocation
A co-owner told the Salem News that the town has overestimated the unpaid utility bills and the negative publicity has hurt them.
A co-owner of Brutole restaurant said the former Route 1 eatery plans to appeal the Danvers Board of Selectmen’s decision to revoke its liquor license to the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission.
The selectmen voted 4-0 to revoke the license at last week’s meeting. Brutole closed in February without telling the town, owes $4,600 for its liquor license renewal and more than $12,000 in utility fees, and performed plumbing and electrical work without permits, according to Town Manager Wayne Marquis.
Ilias Kakouris, co-owner of the restaurant with his brother, Nick, told the Salem News that Brutole is going to appeal the revocation. The town has overestimated the unpaid utility bills and the negative publicity has hurt them, he told the News.

“We are people; we are not machines,” he told the Salem News.
At a March meeting, the selectmen brought Brutole before the board. The board told Brutole that it must pay the license renewal fee and unpaid utility bills within 30 days and then must sell the license within six months.

As of now, Brutole has not paid the fee and bills, which led the selectmen to revoke the license last week. Brutole’s owners were invited to attend the public hearing last Thursday, but declined the town’s request.
