Danvers Fire, Police To Honor Fallen Emergency Responders

DANVERS, MA — The Danvers fire and police departments will honor the memories of fallen emergency responders in flying their respective memorial flags for the week.

Starting Sunday, Danvers police will fly the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial flag at the police station on Ash Street. Danvers fire will fly the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial flag at the fire stations on High Street and Maple Street.

The memorial is in conjunction with National First Responders Day on Oct. 28.

Danvers has had three first responders in its history who are recognized as having given the ultimate sacrifice in their service to the town.

Danvers Police Officer George Nowak served the town for 22 years, while Firefighter Matt Smith served the town for 17 years.

James Michael Horgan also gave his life for this town in 1965 while fighting a grass fire at the former Almy's shopping center at the intersection of Route 1 and Route 62.

"The town of Danvers, the Danvers Police Department, and the Danvers Fire Department fly these flags to honor all firefighters and officers who have died in the line of duty while proudly serving their communities," town officials said.
