Danvers Moving Forward On Plans To Replace Elementary School

Officials say the new Ivan G. Smith Elementary School is on pace to open in the fall of 2021.

DANVERS, MA -- Danvers officials are scheduling a series of public forums in October on plans to replace the Ivan G. Smith Elementary School. School officials want to replace the existing school, which was built in 1974 and currently enrolls 283 students, with a new school that would house up to 465 students in grades K-5. Plans are currently in the detailed design phase, and Danvers officials hope the new school will be ready by the start of the 2021-22 school year.

The existing school on Lobao Drive uses an open-classroom platform that was popular in the 1970s but has since fallen out of favor with educators. According to the Salem News, which first reported this story, the new school will cost about $50 million to build.
