DANVERS, MA — Danvers is restricting access to town offices amid the recent surge in coronavirus cases in the town and the region.

Town offices will be accessible through appointment only.

"This rollback to earlier operations employed this summer contributes to the town's effort to minimize community spread and help protect residents and employees," the town said in announcing the change.

Danvers remained in the state's "high risk" category for community coronavirus spread with 388 positive tests recorded over the past 14 days leading up to last week's state report released on Thursday.

The city's cases per 100,000 people — a key metric the state uses in determining whether a city or town is "high risk" for community spread — rose to 84.2, up from 68.27 two weeks ago.

Residents are encouraged to conduct town business online and over the phone. Town offices will only be accessible "in extraordinary circumstances by appointment only, which can only take place during normal work hours."

When a resident requests an appointment a determination will be made whether services take place online, via telephone or email, or whether an in-person appointment is necessary.

There is a secure mail drop box at the entrance of Town Hall that is monitored and available 24 hours a day. Utility payments can be made via a drop box in front of the business office.

Those using the drop boxes are reminded to submit all payments in sealed envelopes.
