DHS Marching Band Performs Pearl Harbor Memorial
The attack on Pearl Harbor was 70 years ago on December 7, and Danvers High School Marching Band will perform in Hawaii to help commemorate the occasion.
This week’s Whiz Kids are the Danvers youths who comprise the Marching Band. On Monday, November 21, the band members will be heading to Hawaii to help commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor in several performances during the week-long memorial.
On Tuesday the band will perform on the pier at the USS Missouri Battleship at Pearl Harbor, the last battleship commissioned by the USA, and in 1992 was the world’s last operational battleship. The ship provided gunfire support for many famous and important battles of WWII. On September 2, 1945, the ship was chosen to be stage for the signing of Japan’s Formal Instrument of Surrender, bringing an end to the war.
Following their 30 minute performance, the group will participate in a flag ceremony, where a representative of the Danvers High School Marching Band will place a wreath at the base of the USS Arizona Memorial, to honor the 1,177 souls lost in the tragedy.
The band will perform on Friday in the “Waikiki Holiday Parade,” to honor the veterans of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
There was 18 months of planning and fundraising for the 142 travelers , ensuring that everyone who wanted to go is going.

"We’re very excited, the students are very excited. They have a very good work ethic, they work well together and are a very cohesive group," said Ronald Parsons, DHS' band director for 26 years.
In the past, the Danvers High School Marching Band has performed at the Tournament of Roses Parade on three occasions. They are the only high school band from Massachusetts ever to appear three times, and the only band in New England to appear three times in less than ten years.
