A front desk staff member at the DoubleTree Boston North Shore Hotel on Ferncroft, called 911 just after 3 Tuesday morning. The car fire was initially called in as an accident, with possible explosions, according to Danvers Fire Chief Kevin P. Farrell in a statement. The sound turned out to be popping tires. No other vehicles appear to be involved. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The hotel is close to the Danvers-Middleton town line, so both town’s police and fire departments responded, as well as a hotel security guard.

Chief Farrell said it was a true team effort to attempt to rescue the man.

“I have such respect for the Middleton departments. They just had to deal with that recent accident when two people were killed after a Ferrari struck a tree, and they’re here again with such care and compassion,” Chief Farrell said. “I’m very thankful for the efforts of everybody.”
