Finished Construction Adds Day Visits Back at Essex County Jail

Visitors can now see inmates from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Day visits at the Essex County Correctional Facility, 20 Manning Road in Middleton, have been reinstated after construction completed on a sheriff’s office parking lot.

The day visits were suspended about a year ago, according to the sheriff department’s Director of Communications Maurice Pratt.

The Essex County Sheriff’s Department took space from their visitor parking lot in October of 2012 to start construction on the Essex County Regional Emergency Communications Center, otherwise known as a dispatch office. The center provides 9-1-1 emergency call service to Amesbury, Beverly, Essex, Middleton, Topsfield and Wenham.

Visitors were allowed to park in the sheriff department’s employee lot during construction, according to Pratt, but the lot could not accommodate every visitor. The department suspended visits in 2013.

The visits were reinstated after the parking lot at the Essex County Jail was expanded to create an additional 80 spots. Construction on the expansion finished last week and day visits began again on Dec. 29.
