Firefighter for a Day: Lucy Gets Up Close With Danvers Fire Training

The Danvers Fire Department conducted live fire training exercises at a vacant home on River Street over several days.

Selectman Keith Lucy took Danvers Fire Chief Kevin Farrell up on his offer to join the department for some live fire training exercises earlier this week.

Lucy suited up in full firefighter gear Monday, getting an up close and hands-on glimpse of a house fire with a victim trapped inside. Farrell had extended the invitation to selectmen last week to attend the training.

"Thank you to Chief Farrell and all of the guys that gave me the opportunity to participate in a training exercise this morning with the Danvers Fire Department," Lucy said in a note on the department's Facebook page.

"I was able to do two evolutions at a simulated house fire. One as an observer right next to Chief Farrell and the other at the lead nozzle. It was an incredible experience. Thank you again and I hope I didn't get in the way too much," he wrote.

The training was conducted over several days at a vacant home at 56 River St., which will be torn down soon to make way for some new condominiums.
