ID of Driver in Police Chase Remains Unknown

Police are still working to identify the man behind the wheel of a car that crashed after a police pursuit that started in Middleton and ended in Danvers on Wednesday morning.

Middleton Police Chief James DiGianvittorio said that the driver was hospitalized after the 9 a.m. crash at Maple and Pine streets in Danvers. The driver suffered minor injuries and had been released from the hospital as of 2:30 p.m. He was taken to the State Police barracks in Danvers, where officers planned to use the Automated Fingerprint Identification System to identify him.

“He’s not giving us any info,” DiGianvittorio said.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle.

The police pursuit started in Middleton after a police officer ran the license plate on a grey Honda Civic and found that the registered owner had a suspended license. When the officer went to stop the Civic, the driver took off down Route 62 into Danvers.

The car clipped another car and then hit the traffic island at Maple and Pine streets in Danvers and flipped, said Danvers Police Sgt. Robert Bettencourt. The crashed leveled several streets signs in the area.

Danvers and State Police assisted at the crash along with Danvers Fire Department and Lyons ambulance.

“He tried to run on foot after the crash and was apprehended,” Bettencourt said.

The crash closed a small section of Pine Street between Maple Street and Vineyard Street for about a half hour.
