Inspectors Called In After Truck Hits Bridge

A Route 128 overpass was struck by a trash truck on Friday morning.

A trash truck crashed into a Route 128 overpass on Friday morning, prompting an inspection by workers from the state Department of Transportation.

The inspection found no major damage to the bridge, said MassDOT spokesman Michael Verseckes.

Verseckes said MassDOT was notified that a vehicle had made contact with the bridge that carries Route 128 over Route 62/Elliott Street at about 10:30 a.m. on Friday.

"Inspectors were dispatched to the bridge immediately and were able to determine that the damage was minor in nature," Verseckes said. "From here, MassDOT will finalize a bridge inspection report, and determine whether any repairs are necessary."

The crash happened at about 9:30 a.m. when a JRM Hauling and Recyling truck headed westbound on Elliott Street struck the top of the bridge with a "hoist," according to Danvers Police Sgt. Robert Bettencourt.

Nobody was injured. The truck suffered "significant damage," Bettencourt said, and the bridge had "minor observable damage."
