Middleton Jail In Lockdown After Fight Injures Inmates, Officers

The Essex County House of Correction remained closed to visitors on Wednesday four days after the fight occurred.

MIDDLETON, MA — The Middleton Jail and House of Correction remained in lockdown on Wednesday four days after a fight involving inmates injured inmates and correctional officers.

An Essex County Sheriff's Department spokesperson told Patch that the fight broke out Saturday involving seven inmates where two of the inmates and two officers sustained minor injuries.

The spokesperson said three handmade weapons were found following the fight and the jail was placed on lockdown "as officials conduct an extensive, facility-wide search for any other weapons."

"We will re-open the facility once that search is complete," the spokesperson told Patch.

The two injured inmates were taken to a local hospital with cuts and returned to custody at the jail on Saturday.

The two officers were also treated for their injuries and released later Saturday.
