DANVERS, MA — A bill unveiled by U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) would earmark grant money to states that digitize drivers records to make them easier to share. The bill comes after a deadly crash in New Hampshire this summer in which a man who had driving infractions in multiple states killed seven motorcyclists. Infractions in other states had been reported to Massachusetts, but the paper documents were never inputted into the state's drive data system.

"It’s time to modernize how the RMV and DMVs across the country share information, so that dangerous drivers are taken off the road," Moulton said in a Facebook post. Under the State and Federal Electronic Data Records to Improve Vehicle-operator Eligibility Reporting Systems (SAFE DRIVERS) Act of 2019, states would receive federal grants to defer the cost of digitizing the records and joining a nationwide network that would send out instantaneous alerts when drivers licenses are suspended or revoked.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker has called for federal legislation to set up a system to alert states when drivers face out-of-state traffic violations.
