DANVERS, MA — With Black Friday catering to big box stores with their slashed prices in an effort to entice shoppers out the day after Thanksgiving, it can be difficult for a Danvers mom-and-pop to keep up.

What about the little guy? That's basically what prompted the birth of Small Business Saturday back in 2010. Now locally owned business across the country take part in Small Business Saturday, offering their own deals. And while they may not quite on the scale of those Black Friday deals, the spotlight gets put on the smaller shops that have been the backbone of the US economy.

Danvers residents can take part in the fun of Small Business Saturday all day. Think: Cherry Street Fish Market, Western Cycle, and Danvers Agway, among the many.

American Express gets the credit for founding the shopping holiday, which got its official start on Nov. 27, 2010, according to the Small Business Saturday Facebook page. Locally owned business across the country now take part in the event.
