Big Love a Big Hit at Nobles

Theater students will showcase their winter mainstage play for the final time Saturday afternoon.

Dubbed a black comedy that appeals to all ages by its assistant director, Nobles theater students will perform "Big Love" for the final time Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

The 90-minute play will take place in the Vinik Theatre. The play's faculty advisor and director, Jillian Grunnah, adapted the script of The Suppliant Women and molded it to fit the target audience and the cast.

"The original one is highly violent and sexual," Grunnah said. "In order to do it, we had to water it down."

Fifty brides are arranged to marry 50 of their cousins in a suspended-reality-type of play that utilizes 11 main cast members and 17 extras.

"It's based very strongly on classical mythology," said David DiNicola, the assistant director. "You wind up getting into things that are not-so-concrete and it does seem like a myth up on stage."

The play brings in modern culture as well with references to Facebook, DiNicola said.

"[The play] focuses on how different people react in situations," DiNicola said.
